The Stars and Stripes at 250: Honoring America’s Flag and Its Traditions

Americans’ relationship with their flag is a unique one. As we celebrate Independence Day and commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Stars and Stripes serve as a powerful symbol of our history, shared values, and the principles upon which the United States was established. Our flag flies at Rockefeller Center, the United Nations, and even the Moon, but the average American isn’t always familiar with the protocol for displaying it. The International Center’s Chief of Protocol serves a special purpose. In fact, Peter Kirkwood’s role requires an in-depth knowledge of the U.S. Flag Code and the international customs that govern the display of national flags.
As our nation celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, communities across the country will gather for parades, fireworks, ceremonies, and community celebrations. This year’s observance carries added significance as the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its founding, providing an opportunity to reflect on our nation’s history and the symbols that represent it. Since the first American flag was adopted, 27 official versions have flown over our nation, with today’s familiar 50-star flag introduced in 1960 following Hawaii’s admission as the 50th state.
The Code
Respect for the American flag extends beyond its symbolism. It is also guided by the United States Flag Code. Originally developed through the efforts of The American Legion and other civic organizations in 1923, the Flag Code was adopted into federal law on June 22, 1942, providing guidance for the proper display and treatment of the American flag.
With The American Legion’s national headquarters located within view of The International Center’s offices, the organization has spent more than a century educating Americans about proper flag etiquette.
The Center’s Chief of Protocol continues that tradition by providing guidance to organizations requesting flags from our international flag collection. One of the sections most frequently referenced is Section 7, Subsection (g), which states:
“When flags of two or more nations are displayed, they are to be flown from separate staffs of the same height. The flags should be of approximately equal size. International usage forbids the display of the flag of one nation above that of another nation in time of peace.”
Flag Program

Whether supporting international business delegations, diplomatic visits, cultural festivals, educational programs, or community celebrations, our Flag Program helps organizations create displays that honor both American traditions and the nations represented. While many events require only a few flags, larger international gatherings may utilize our complete collection representing all 193 United Nations member states.
As we celebrate Independence Day and commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the American flag serves as more than a national emblem. It reflects our nation’s history while reminding us of the importance of respect, diplomacy, and friendship among nations.
