Celebrating Love and Justice: Honoring the Legacy of Loving v. Virginia
Love knows no boundaries, and on June 8th, we invite you to join us at Gainbridge Fieldhouse to celebrate the landmark Supreme Court decision of Loving v. Virginia. In partnership with Pacers Sports & Entertainment and former Mayor Greg Ballard, The International Center is proud to host an event that commemorates this pivotal moment in history and celebrates the power of love to overcome injustice.
Historical Context
In 1958, Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving stood up against the discriminatory laws that sought to tear them apart. Mildred, a black woman, and Richard, a white man, traveled to Washington D.C. to marry, as interracial marriage was prohibited in their home state of Virginia. Just weeks after their return, they were arrested and charged with violating Virginia’s anti-miscegenation laws.
The Lovings’ legal battle culminated in the Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia in 1967. The Court’s unanimous decision struck down laws prohibiting interracial marriage, affirming the fundamental right to marry regardless of race. This landmark ruling not only changed the course of American history but also challenged deeply ingrained racial prejudices.
Celebrating Love
On June 8th, we come together to honor the legacy of the Lovings and all those who have fought for love and equality. Gainbridge Fieldhouse will be filled with the joyous celebration of love as we host vow renewals for interracial couples, officiated by former Mayor Greg Ballard. It’s a chance to reaffirm the commitment and bond shared by couples who have overcome societal barriers to be together.
Learning and Reflection
But our event is more than just a celebration of love—it’s an opportunity to learn, reflect, and connect. Throughout the day, attendees will have the chance to delve into the history and significance of the Loving case through interactive exhibits and presentations. Local interracial couples will share their stories, offering insights into the challenges they’ve faced and the triumphs they’ve experienced.
“This is a great opportunity to reflect on the impact the Loving verdict has had on our lives.” – CaSondra Shim, Deputy Director of Relocation Services
Community and Culture
As we gather to celebrate, we’ll also enjoy the rich tapestry of culture and community. Indulge in delicious food, explore vibrant artwork, and sway to the rhythms of live music. Gainbridge Fieldhouse will be transformed into a hub of joy and inclusivity, where people of all backgrounds can come together in solidarity and celebration.
We extend a warm invitation to everyone—whether you’re in an interracial relationship, a supporter of love and equality, or simply interested in learning more about this pivotal moment in history. Join us on June 8th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, with doors opening at 12:30 pm, for a day filled with love, laughter, and inspiration.
