Celebrating European Neighbors’ Day in Indiana
European Neighbors’ Day, celebrated annually on the last Friday of May, falls on May 31 this year. This day encourages community members to come together, fostering interaction and camaraderie. It originated in Paris in 1999 as “Immeubles en Fête” and quickly expanded throughout Europe and beyond, involving millions of participants across 49 countries.
The idea, conceived by Atanase Périfan and his friends, aimed to combat loneliness and promote neighborhood solidarity. Early events included helping neighbors with financial difficulties, organizing family-style Christmases, and arranging transportation for those in need. By 2004, the celebration had officially become European Neighbors’ Day, engaging millions in Europe.
