1. Fez, Morocco
Fez, Morocco, is a city where history and culture come alive in every winding alley and bustling souk. Known as the country’s spiritual and cultural heart, Fez is home to the world’s oldest university, Al-Qarawiyyin, and the well-preserved medieval medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city is famous for its traditional tanneries, where leather is dyed in centuries-old stone vats, creating a striking visual spectacle. From exploring historic madrasas and grand mosques to savoring rich Moroccan cuisine, Fez offers an immersive experience that blends tradition with timeless charm.
“I would recommend Fez, Morocco because of it’s extensive medina (the oldest walled part of the city) which holds a wealth of historic sites and artisan workshops. The city is filled with amazing food and extremely skilled craftsmen who produce leather goods, ceramics, rugs, tapestries, and more. Make sure you have a guide to show you around, though, because the streets of the medina are like a labyrinth and it’s easy to get lost!” – Katy Olson, Spring 2025 Community Development and Philanthropy Intern
2. San Juan, Guatemala
Nestled on the shores of Lake Atitlán, San Juan, Guatemala, is a hidden gem known for its vibrant culture, breathtaking scenery, and strong indigenous traditions. Visitors can explore local art cooperatives, hike to scenic viewpoints, or take a boat ride across the lake to soak in the beauty of the surrounding volcanoes. With its welcoming community and deep cultural roots, San Juan offers an authentic and enriching experience for travelers looking to connect with Guatemala’s rich history and natural beauty.
“I would say one of the most incredible places I have visited is San Juan in Guatemala. There is a hotel there right on the lake that looks like something out of a Hallmark film. Beautiful setting next to the water and amongst the hilly/mountainous area. There are also a lot of women-owned businesses in the area that we were able to do a tour of for coffee-growing, beekeeping, fabric-weaving, and natural medicine.” – Brock Worrell, Spring 2025 International Diplomacy Intern
3. Jeju Island
Jeju Island, often called the “Hawaii of South Korea,” is a breathtaking destination known for its volcanic landscapes, stunning coastlines, and rich cultural heritage. Located off the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula, is home to Hallasan, South Korea’s highest mountain, along with picturesque waterfalls, lava tubes, and pristine beaches. Visitors can explore unique attractions like the Manjanggul Cave, the scenic Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak), and the whimsical Hello Kitty Island.
“I strongly recommend going to Jeju Island! Jeju Island offers a variety of natural and cultural experiences. You can explore traditional Jeju culture and enjoy their local cuisine too!” – Yejin Shin, Spring 2025 Korea Projects Coordinator Intern
4. Florence, Italy
Florence, Italy, is a city that feels like an open-air museum, brimming with Renaissance art, stunning architecture, and a rich cultural heritage. The iconic Duomo, with its magnificent dome designed by Brunelleschi, dominates the city’s skyline, while the charming Ponte Vecchio, lined with goldsmith shops, stretches across the Arno River. Beyond its artistic treasures, Florence delights visitors with its vibrant piazzas, cozy cafés, and delicious Tuscan cuisine, from handmade pasta to the famous bistecca alla Fiorentina. Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a history buff, or simply a lover of Italian culture, Florence offers an unforgettable journey through time.

5. Yamanaka-ko, Japan
Lake Yamanaka, the largest of the Fuji Five Lakes, is a serene getaway offering breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. Located in Yamanashi Prefecture, this picturesque lake is a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, with activities like boating, fishing, cycling, and even swan-shaped paddle boats. Its high elevation provides cooler temperatures in summer and a peaceful, snow-dusted landscape in winter. The area is also known for its onsen (hot springs), where visitors can relax while admiring the iconic mountain. Whether you’re capturing the perfect reflection of Fuji in the still waters or enjoying a lakeside picnic, Yamanaka-ko offers a tranquil escape just a short journey from Tokyo.
“Taking a swan boat ride on Lake Yamanaka with Mt. Fuji towering in the background was absolutely surreal. Exploring the ancient Oshino Village, savoring traditional Japanese food, and indulging in ice cream made from local fresh blueberries made the experience even more unforgettable. If you’re looking for a perfect mix of natural beauty and cultural immersion, this should be on your bucket list!” – Grace Bland, Marketing and Communications Manager
