International Visitor Leadership Program
What is IVLP?
Have you heard of IVLP? It is the International Visitor Leadership Program, a premier professional exchange program offered by the U.S. Department of State. During an IVLP program, foreign leaders in a variety of fields visit the United States to learn more about their sector and grow their network of global connections. Visitors attend meetings and workshops where they are exposed to different occupations held by professionals in their respective fields.
Almost 5,000 International Visitors come to the U.S. each year as a part of an IVLP. Since its founding, more than 200,000 International Visitors have fostered valuable friendships with Americans through the IVLP. The goal of the IVLP programs is to provide valuable firsthand knowledge about the United States and its culture, politics, society, and economy — all while cultivating lasting relationships.
How IVLP Works
The IVLP was launched in 1940 to strengthen ties with foreign partners around the world. A typical IVLP program consists of participants visiting four different U.S. communities over the course of three weeks. Each program can look slightly different than this depending on the theme, the specific requests of the Embassy and additional factors and cultural considerations.
To be a part of an IVLP group, you must be nominated and selected by the staff of the U.S. Embassies worldwide as there is no application. These visits are short-term (less than 1 month), so the learning is fast paced and impactful.
Benefits of IVLP
The IVLP offers participants the opportunity for professional development, networking opportunities, and cultural exchange. Volunteers, through the help of Global Ties U.S., help to develop professional programs and culturally rich activities to promote a sense of hospitality for the international visitors. As of recently, there are 85 community organizations in 44 states that are connected to local governments, nonprofits, business, and scholarly professionals.
Connection to The Center
This week, The International Center had the pleasure of hosting an IVLP, Female Entrepreneurs from Africa. Anna Tridico, Community Development and Philanthropy intern, attended this IVLP. She shares her experience:
I had an incredible time accompanying this IVLP; they were such a warm, outgoing, and knowledgeable group. Their commitment to supporting women on a global scale through policy and entrepreneurship was inspiring. I learned so much about female investment, financial literacy, and strength in community from sitting in on their meetings with Indianapolis community members making strides in these areas. Forming connections with these women and hearing how much they loved their time in Indianapolis was gratifying.
The International Center is a global catalyst aimed at fostering global connections with our international partners from around the world, thanks to robust international exchange programs such as the IVLP.
