“Celebrating Our New Neighbors” at Eagle Branch Library creates a common space and hosts activities to bring together long-time residents of and newcomers to the neighborhoods around the branch. During the months of September and November, the branch will host programs and standing displays that will highlight a different set of countries and culture. In September, the branch will focus on Asia, specifically Burma and Thailand. In November, the branch will focus on Africa and the Caribbean, specifically Nigeria, West Africa and Haiti. These countries were selected because a number of immigrants in the local community emigrated from them.
The programs feature story times, both in the branch and outreach daycares, which focus on books related to that month’s countries. They also provide opportunities for visitors to learn more about foreign language collections at the Library. The centerpiece of each month’s programming is a family program that includes a musical performance, family stories and personal narratives from immigrants. Refreshments from the featured cultural regions are provided.
