GermanFest, a day-long festival which occurs every year in October, celebrates all things German. From weiner dog races to the traditional Steinheben(strong man contest), GermanFest brings the city of Indianapolis together. Music by German groups such as Alpine Express and traditional groups like the Indianapolis Mannerchor and Dans Norden provide a variety of German entertainment. Food vendors from Sangerchor, the Rathskeller and Heidelberg Cafe showcase German cuisine. A large children’s area brings German games like Fische Angeln(Fishing Pond), Bastelecke(Arts and Crafts) and Erbsenschlagen(PeaPound) to children at the festival. Back again in 2017 will be the Durstig Games, a series of friendly and fun competitive games, a well as the Indy Urban Flea Market which takes up an entire block of New Jersey Street where 50 local vendors show and sell their goods.
