Sankt Nikolaus Fest is a German tradition. The history behind the event is when evening comes, St. Nikolaus, a reverend gray-haired figure with flowing beard, bishop’s raiment, gold embroidered cope, miter and pastoral staff, will knock on doors and inquire about the behavior of the children. The custom of examining the children, where they will deliver a verse, sing, or otherwise show their skills, is still widespread in German-speaking countries.
At this event we invite children to bring their families and have a day of fun! We aim to make this an affordable family event so children are charged $8 and adults are free with all activities included in the ticket price. There are various children’s activities including making German(Froebel) stars, dancing led by Dans Norden, a gingerbread house building contest, a puppet show and the live Christmas tree lighting.
In addition, there are free refreshments provided by Heidelberg Haus, a ChristkindlMarket as well as singing of both American and German carols.
