Outside of the specific intern roles, The International Center provides a Weekly Intern Program that covers topics like international protocol, board governance, community outreach, non-profit fundraising, interviewing and mentoring, social media, and intro to business operations, plus a variety of unique opportunities such as:

  • Represent The Center at naturalization ceremonies and other city-wide events
  • Participate in the hiring process for the next intern cohort
  • Host a lunch meeting for the board chair
  • Present the results of a project you completed to staff, a committee or the board
  • Attend a staff outing in the community
  • Be a guest at galas, luncheons or receptions when available!

Absolutely! We understand that you are a student and have other activities in which you are involved. The International Center allows you the flexibility to work around your school’s internship requirements and create a schedule that works for you.

Yes, you are able to do so, but we encourage you to select your top 2 or 3 options that align with your degree or career considerations.   Internship roles include the following:

  • Accounting, Finance, & Operations Intern
  • Community Outreach, Development, & Philanthropy Intern
  • Information Systems & CRM Management Intern
  • International Diplomacy Intern
  • International Relocations Intern
  • International Visitor Programs Intern
  • Marketing & Communications Intern
  • International Business Development, Research Analysis & Consulting Intern
  • Non-Profit and Human Resource Management Intern
  • Operations & Organizational Project Management Intern

No. Students at colleges and universities from anywhere in the state, country, or world may apply. Interns must be able to work at our physical location. Please note that all students must arrange their own travel and accommodation for the duration of their internship. The Center also accepts internship applications from recent college graduates.

Interns are paid $15/hour, plus $80 monthly parking stipend.

There are several, and can vary from role to role, season to season.  The principal responsibilities include:

  • Develop/document goals with your supervisor
  • Attend weekly intern meetings featuring special guest speakers & customized career programming
  • Represent The International Center at naturalization ceremonies and other city-wide events
  • Support The International Center’s virtual programming and development initiatives
  • Provide research support for special projects and ongoing programs
  • Assist The International Center with fundraising and special events
  • Serve as an organizational ambassador in recruiting future interns and volunteers

Through the years, we have had a wide variety of students with varying majors intern with The Center. All students with a strong interest in gaining professional and international experience are welcome to apply. Our preferred qualifications for successful interns are:

  • Interpersonal skills
  • Writing skills
  • Research aptitude and/or skills
  • Organizational & Time Management skill
  • Willing to be versatile and flexible, with a self-starter work ethic
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with staff members, volunteers, and external stakeholders
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Cultural Awareness

We provide a Weekly Intern Program that covers topics like international protocol, board governance, community outreach, non-profit fundraising, interviewing and mentoring, social media, intro to business operations, etc. plus a variety of unique opportunities such as:

  • attend at a U. S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana Naturalization Ceremony
  • participate in the hiring process for the next intern cohort
  • host a lunch meeting for the Board Chair
  • present the results of a project you completed, to staff or board committee
  • staff outing in the community, such as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
  • attend a Citizen of the Year Awards Gala, Indiana Economic Development speaker luncheon, or Mandela Fellows reception to name a few!

Yes. Our office dresses business professional as it is common for us to host meetings with business, government and international leaders.

Internship timeframes for applications and orientation:

  • Spring (January-May)
    • Spring Internship Application Opens: September 1
    • Spring Intern Orientation Date: Mid-January
  • Summer (May-August)
    • Summer Internship Application Opens: February 1
    • Summer Intern Orientation Date: Mid-May
  • Fall (August-December)
    • Fall Internship Application Opens: June 1
    • Fall  Intern Orientation Date: Mid-August

Please note that The International Center reviews applications on a rolling basis, so it is important to submit an application as soon as possible! Once a role is filled, the application will close and applicants may no longer apply.

The Center’s office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Interns work an average of 20 hours per week during the fall and spring terms, and an average of 30 hours per week during the summer term.
