Meet The Center: Rebecca VanVliet
First things first: tell us a little about your background.
I’m a Hoosier transplant – originally from Dublin, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus and the home of Wendy’s, giant concrete corn, and the largest three-day Irish festival in the world. I moved to Indy a few years ago to attend Butler University to study marketing. I loved Indy too much to leave after graduation, and so now I live in Irvington with over a dozen houseplants at various levels of life.
What drew you to your role at The International Center?
I started with The Center as the spring marketing and communication intern before joining the team as the full-time marketing and communication manager in May 2019! The chance to work in an office with such a strong sense of community and purpose with coworkers who genuinely care about the work they do was too good to pass up.
What is your favorite aspect of your role?
I love the chance to tell people about The International Center! I think The Center is a fantastic resource for our entire state, and I love finding new channels and ways to reach out and spread the word.
If you have traveled or lived abroad, which location was the most impactful on your life? Why?
I visited Europe in high school and my favorite stop was in Adelboden, Switzerland in the Bernese Alps. The mountains were stunning (especially to a lifelong Midwesterner) and it was an oasis of calm after a week of tourist traps. There, I visited Our Chalet, which is a world center for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts and was amazed by the artifacts left by girls from around the world.
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I’m the youngest of four and have three older sisters. (No brothers!)
