INDIANA UNIVERSITY
Indiana University is a national leader in international engagement, offering a robust suite of global studies, virtual and in-person education abroad opportunities, and language programs that connect Indiana to the world.
For over 200 years, Indiana University has embraced boundless growth and transformation, evolving into an academic powerhouse with impact far beyond the state’s borders. This venerable institution has built a reputation as one of the world’s leading research universities—home to top-ranked business and music schools, the world’s first school of philanthropy, the nation’s first School of Informatics, and the largest medical school in the country.
Today, Indiana University offers an impressive array of 930+ degree programs across nine regional campuses, where students drive innovation across all industries. Their students and alumni have stood in the spotlight on both the national and global stage, whether they’re conquering the basketball court, posing on the red carpet, or receiving the coveted Nobel Prize. No matter the career, this legacy of success has shaped their identity and helped Indiana become a household name across the globe.
Over the last decade alone, Indiana University has achieved remarkable milestones in their growth, including the new Luddy Artificial Intelligence Center, a groundbreaking intelligent systems engineering program, and launching Big Red 200, one of the fastest university-owned supercomputers in the country. The creation of the Center for Rural Engagement has fortified the university’s commitment to rural communities, while the Language Flagship program helps students become proficient in critical global languages like Arabic, Chinese and Russian.
But one of the most revolutionary additions to Indiana University is the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies (HLS). The HLS offers nearly 70 graduate and undergraduate programs to prepare students to succeed in the international sphere, whether they choose to be diplomats, entrepreneurs, scholars, or anything in between. They also teach more languages than any other university in the United States—with over 80 programs ranging from Azerbaijani to Zulu.
The Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies has also become a gathering place for international leaders and scholars. The school hosts a variety of international speakers and seminars, as well as an event known as the America’s Role in the World Conference which convenes politicians, journalists, and other academics to discuss critical global affairs.
This commitment to global engagement goes beyond the classroom, including an impressive portfolio of over 380 study abroad programs. These programs travel to over 50 countries, giving thousands of students a valuable opportunity to gain real-world experience. In fact, one in every three graduating seniors at IU gets a chance to explore the world and study abroad during their education.
With faculty representing more than 140 countries and over 7,000 international students, Indiana University also stands as a beacon of international diversity here in Indiana. In fact, the university maintains seven local cultural centers. From the First Nations Educational & Cultural Center to the African American Art Institute, these centers give diverse communities a place to connect, celebrate and share their cultures with one another.
Indiana University has also made giant leaps for international exchange by opening five Global Gateways around the world. This Global Gateway Network serves as ready access points where students, faculty and alumni can foster collaboration in different countries—creating opportunities for overseas workshops, conferences, research, alumni engagement, and other partnerships.
With all these programs to foster global community, Indiana University has become an immeasurable force for education and research around the world. And in the coming years, the future beckons with even greater promise—with the construction of the Ferguson International Center, a true home for IU’s international programming and welcoming foreign delegations.
